Introduction:

As a medical professor responsible for designing college assignments and answers for medical college students, I am frequently tasked with creating assignments that require comparing and contrasting different evidence-based practice (EBP) models. In this assignment, I have been asked to compare and contrast two EBP models out of the following five – ACE Star Model, ARRC Model, Iowa Model, Johns Hopkins EBP Model, and Stetler Model. Additionally, I have been asked to discuss which of these models would most likely work in my urgent care community health center, which has a patient population consisting mostly of uninsured Hispanic individuals with low income and low educational levels. Finally, I must explain why one model would work better than the other with my colleagues or organizational culture and support my answer with references.

1) Compare and contrast two EBP models.

Two EBP models that have gained significant prominence over the years are the Iowa Model and the ACE Star Model. The Iowa Model is a widely used EBP model that is centered around the concept of problem-solving. It consists of seven steps – 1) Identification of a problem, 2) Evidence appraisal, 3) Synthesis of evidence, 4) Development of a practice recommendation, 5) Development of a practice change implementation plan, 6) Implementation of proposed changes, and 7) Evaluation of outcomes. The ACE Star Model, on the other hand, is a five-step model that emphasizes the need for context as a critical element in decision-making. The five steps include – 1) Asking a clinical question, 2) Finding and appraising evidence, 3) Integrating evidence with clinical expertise and patient needs, 4) Assessing the practice decision or change, and 5) Evaluating the practice decision or change.

The primary differences between the two models pertain to their focus and scope. While the Iowa Model concentrates on problem-solving in a stepwise fashion, the ACE Star Model emphasizes context-based decision-making by aligning evidence with clinical expertise and patient needs. The ACE Star Model also offers a more concise and flexible approach that is easily adaptable to clinical practice settings.

2) Discuss which would most likely work in your agency or clinical unit.

Given the patient population at my urgent care community health center, I believe that the ACE Star Model would be the best suited for our clinical unit. The ACE Star Model, with its emphasis on clinical expertise and patient needs, would align well with the community-centric approach that we follow at our clinic. The model’s focus on finding and appraising evidence while keeping patient-specific factors in mind would assist in devising evidence-based interventions that are tailored to the specific needs of the patients we serve. Additionally, the model’s concise and flexible approach would be beneficial in developing interventions that are practical and can be implemented within the constraints of the patient population we serve.

3) Explain why one model would work better than the other with your colleagues or organizational culture.

The ACE Star Model would work better with my colleagues and organizational culture for several reasons. Firstly, the model’s emphasis on finding evidence that is applicable to specific patients while keeping in mind clinical expertise would be appreciated by my colleagues, who often find the Iowa Model’s stepwise approach to be too rigid and time-consuming. Secondly, the ACE Star Model’s focus on context-based decision-making would be well-suited to the organizational culture at my urgent care community health center, which places a premium on providing individualized care to patients in a community-centric setting. Finally, the model’s adaptability and flexibility would enable us to devise practical, evidence-based interventions that could be implemented within the resource and time constraints of our center.
