Include any contraindications to exercise that you may discover in your research and address them in your answer. Maddie was for the most part sedentary in her younger years. Discuss how this may have contributed to her present condition. In your answer include the number of days per week you will train this client, the types of exercises she will be performing, the number of sets & repetitions, and so forth. Include citations of the research you based your recommendations on and explain why you feel this is the best course of action.

Introduction:
The medical field is vast, and it takes a lot of effort and time to learn and understand each condition. As a medical professor, I always try to provide the best education and guidance to my students. In this assignment, I have designed questions and a client profile for medical college students to test their understanding and knowledge of rheumatoid arthritis, osteoarthritis, rotator cuff muscles, and designing a training program for a patient with osteoarthritis.

Answer:

1. Rheumatoid arthritis is an autoimmune disease that causes inflammation in the joints. The symptoms include joint pain, stiffness, and swelling. Osteoarthritis is a degenerative joint disease that affects the cartilage of the joints. The symptoms include joint pain, stiffness, tenderness, and loss of flexibility. As a trainer, the primary concerns while training a client with arthritis are:
– Avoiding high-impact exercises that can put stress on the joints
– Encouraging low-impact exercises like biking, swimming, or walking to maintain joint mobility and flexibility.
– Protecting the joints from further damage by using proper techniques and equipment.
– Avoiding exercises that cause pain and discomfort to the joints.

2. The rotator cuff muscles consist of four muscles – supraspinatus, infraspinatus, teres minor, and subscapularis. The mechanisms for rotator cuff injury are trauma, overuse, or degeneration. Contraindicated movements for the rotator cuff muscles are overhead activities, cross-body movements, and forward flexion.

Learning Experience:
I chose option one for the learning experience, which was to search for “strength training and osteoporosis.” I found many articles that support the benefits of strength training on osteoporosis. The articles suggest that strength training can reduce the risk of fractures, improve bone mineral density in postmenopausal women, and improve muscle strength and balance, which can reduce fall risk.

Client Profile:
Maddie is an 80-year-old female with severe osteoarthritis. Maddie’s sedentary lifestyle in her younger years may have contributed to her present condition. Based on research, the best course of action for Maddie would be low-impact exercises that promote joint mobility and flexibility. Maddie should perform exercises such as walking, cycling, and swimming for 30-60 minutes a day for at least three days a week. Maddie should also perform strength training exercises, such as bodyweight squats and lunges, for two sets of 10-15 repetitions. The exercises should be done at a moderate intensity, and Maddie should avoid any movements that cause pain and discomfort in the joints. The chart below shows a complete workout plan for Maddie.

| Exercise | Sets | Repetitions |
|——————-|————|————-|
| Walking | – | 30-60 min |
| Cycling | – | 30-60 min |
| Swimming | – | 30-60 min |
| Bodyweight squats | 2 | 10-15 |
| Lunges | 2 | 10-15 |

In conclusion, designing a training program for patients with a chronic condition like osteoarthritis requires research and careful consideration. The program should include low-impact exercises that promote joint mobility and flexibility while avoiding movements that cause pain and discomfort in the joints. Strength training exercises should also be included at a moderate intensity to prevent further joint damage.
