As an art and a science, my personal nursing philosophy has unfolded through several experiences, education, and exposure to different ideologies. My philosophy of nursing has evolved to emphasize compassionate care and developing trusting relationships with patients, families, and colleagues. I believe in providing holistic care, encompassing physical and emotional needs, while promoting healthy lifestyles.

During the course, some ideas challenged my personal values and assumptions regarding biomedical ethics, cultural competency, and diversity in nursing. The concepts of healthcare disparities and social determinants of health in nursing practice also raised a sense of discomfort and unease, initiating self-reflection and evaluation.

The ideas regarding healthcare disparities and cultural competency caused personal conflicts and led me to deconstruct those dispositions in a critical manner. Thus, I took several actions to promote my personal philosophy of nursing, including volunteering at a nearby clinic and attending healthcare disparities workshops.

For me, the meta-paradigm of nursing comprises four essential concepts, including person or patient, health, nursing, and environment. All of these are interconnected, and nurses should consider them in their practice. Therefore, in my view, nursing aims to promote optimal health and wellbeing through compassionate, holistic care while accounting for the patient’s physical, social, and environmental factors.

My first written philosophy of nursing has changed significantly throughout the course as I gained a deeper understanding of healthcare, nursing, and its values. I believe my philosophy will continue to evolve as I advance in my career and gain more experience.
