Analyze: Theories of Popular Culture

Evaluation Title: Theories of Popular Culture

For this assignment you will provide a detailed discussion of a theory of pop culture and provide critical discussion of this theory. The purpose of this assignment is to help you hone your critical thinking skills. You will provide exposition and criticism of a theory of pop culture. You may choose either Mass Cultural Theory or Critical Theory.

Your essay should include some discussion of the following questions:

1. What or who determines popular culture? Where does popular culture come from? Does it emerge from the people themselves as an autonomous expression of their interests and modes of experience, or is it imposed from above by those in positions of power as a type of social control?

2. Describe how commercialization and industrialization influences popular culture. Does reducing culture to commodity mean that the criteria of profitability and marketability take precedence over quality, artistry, integrity and intellectual challenge? Or does it result in a universal market where what is popular actually corresponds to what people want and think is valuable? Does marketability and profitability actually produce quality art or does it only benefit business interests?

3. Is popular culture used to control and indoctrinate the people? Is it used to get people to accept and adhere to ideas and values which will ensure the continued dominance of a particular elite and allow them to exercise power over them? Or is popular culture about rebellion and opposition to the prevailing social order? Is pop cultural a spontaneous genuine burst of creativity or is it just a means through which a dominate group exercises control of society?

4. After you provide an accurate account of one of these theories of pop culture, you should then review the strengths and weaknesses of the theory. Can you identify some objections to the theory? You can research objections, but you need to consult reputable sources.

Unit 2 Discussion – Influence of Popular Culture” aria-describedby=”msf0-previous-desc”>PreviousNext

Expert Solution Preview

Introduction:

As a medical professor, it is important that the students I teach have a strong foundation in critical thinking. This includes the ability to analyze and evaluate theories, even outside of the medical field. For this reason, I have designed an assignment for my medical college students that requires them to analyze theories of popular culture. In this assignment, the students will provide a detailed discussion of a theory of pop culture and provide critical discussion of this theory.

Answer to Unit 2 Assessment – Theories of Popular Culture:

The study of popular culture has received increased attention in recent years due to the pervasive influence it has on modern society. One of the theories surrounding popular culture is the Mass Cultural Theory. This theory suggests that mass culture is created and disseminated by those in positions of power, such as corporations and media outlets, and is used as a tool for social control.

According to this theory, popular culture is not a product of the masses, but rather a top-down form of social engineering designed to manipulate the masses into accepting and adhering to certain social norms and values. In other words, popular culture is imposed from above as a means of controlling the masses.

Another theory of popular culture is the Critical Theory. This theory posits that popular culture is a reflection of the prevailing social order, and is used both to control and to challenge that order. Proponents of this theory argue that popular culture can either reinforce the dominant ideology or provide a space for resistance and opposition.

With regards to commercialization and industrialization, the impact of these forces on popular culture is a point of disagreement between the two theories. Mass Cultural Theory suggests that the commodification of culture reduces it to a product that prioritizes profitability and marketability over artistic merit and intellectual challenge. On the other hand, Critical Theory argues that commercialization and industrialization have the potential to democratize cultural production and allow for wider participation by the masses.

Ultimately, it is clear that popular culture is a complex phenomenon that is subject to a wide range of interpretations. While there are strengths and weaknesses to both Mass Cultural Theory and Critical Theory, it is important for medical college students to critically evaluate these theories and arrive at their own conclusions based on a thorough analysis of the available evidence.
