Introduction: In this assignment, we will discuss how HIPAA and the USA Patriot Act affect the privacy of medical information, propose ways to protect the confidentiality of doctor-patient relationships with the increasing usage of the internet by medical organizations, and identify the greatest future threat to healthcare information and information systems and how they can be avoided through current or future practices.

Answer 1: HIPAA and the USA Patriot Act have both been created to ensure the privacy and security of medical information. However, these acts have contrasting objectives. While HIPAA safeguards the confidentiality of medical records, the USA Patriot Act was enacted to counteract terrorism by empowering the government to collect information regarding possible threats. HIPAA has laid down specific regulations that healthcare providers and insurance companies must adhere to protect medical record privacy. The act mandates the implementation of technical, physical, and administrative safeguards to ensure the confidentiality and integrity of electronic protected health information (ePHI).

On the other hand, the USA Patriot Act provides federal agencies easier access to information related to possible terrorist activities. Although HIPAA and the USA Patriot Act have not been created to work together, they feature a lot of overlapping areas, which can lead to confusion and concern regarding privacy. Thus, the possible loss of privacy may not inevitably guarantee national security.

Answer 2: The increasing utilization of online medical records and internet-linked hospital networks has raised serious questions on the confidentiality of the doctor-patient relationship. In this situation, it is crucial to develop efficient security systems for medical organizations to protect the confidentiality of patients’ information. Developing strict guidelines for password management, access control, secure data transfer, and encryption can help protect confidentiality. It is also important to train staff regularly on data privacy and reinforcement of penalties on non-compliance with data privacy policies.

Answer 3: The potential future threats to healthcare information and information systems are evolving every day. With the widespread usage of technology in healthcare, cybersecurity threats are becoming more lethal. Future challenges might involve the theft of medical information for identity theft, blackmail, or other criminal activities. The use of cloud technology for storing medical records might also increase the risk of cyberattacks. To avoid these future threats, it is important to implement comprehensive cybersecurity protocols at all endpoints of medical information systems. With the increase in technology use in healthcare, it is essential to continuously re-evaluate and keep up-to-date on potential future threats.
