Engagement activity and question

I’m working on a health & medical multi-part question and need the explanation and answer to help me learn.

After you have read ch. 7, “The Sociology of Mental Illness” and watched the Tedx Talk “I Am Not A Monster,” please complete the followings:

1. First, I want you to reflect on the Ted Talk. What was your main take-away? Did anything surprise you? Did your perspective of schizophrenia change after watching this? How so?

2. Next, I want you to apply a concept or idea from chapter 7 to the Ted Talk. Be clear in your connection.

3. Lastly, since Cecilia McGough is concerned with supporting students with mental illness, how might universities go about accommodations? What can be done to better support students with mental illness?

PART 2:

From the social psychology perspective, try to provide different explanations about why people would choose to wear face coverings or reject wearing face coverings during covid-19? Discuss at least THREE concepts.

Introduction:
The Ted Talk “I Am Not A Monster” by Cecilia McGough sheds light on the personal experience of living with schizophrenia and aims to challenge the stereotypes associated with mental illness. Chapter 7 of the textbook “Exploring social psychology” delves into the sociology of mental illness, providing insights into the societal factors that influence perceptions and reactions towards mental health conditions. Additionally, the second part of the question explores the social psychology perspective on people’s choices regarding wearing or rejecting face coverings during the COVID-19 pandemic.

Answer 1:
The main take-away from the Ted Talk “I Am Not A Monster” was the raw authenticity with which Cecilia McGough shared her journey of living with schizophrenia. It was both inspiring and enlightening to hear her speak openly about her struggles and triumphs, dispelling the misconception that individuals with schizophrenia are dangerous or unpredictable. McGough’s talk also highlighted the resilience and determination she possesses, as she overcame the stigmatization associated with her mental illness. This talk challenged my preconceived notions about schizophrenia and helped me realize the importance of empathy and understanding when it comes to mental health conditions.

Answer 2:
One concept from chapter 7 that connects to the Ted Talk is “labeling theory.” Labeling theory posits that when an individual is labeled as possessing a particular characteristic or trait, it influences how others perceive and interact with that person. In the context of the talk, Cecilia McGough mentions the negative stereotypes surrounding schizophrenia, such as being violent or dangerous. These stereotypes contribute to the stigmatization of individuals with schizophrenia, leading to social exclusion and discrimination. McGough’s talk serves as a counter-narrative, challenging the labels associated with schizophrenia and showing that individuals with this condition can lead successful lives.

Answer 3:
To better support students with mental illness, universities can implement various accommodations. Firstly, universities should provide comprehensive mental health services on campus, including counseling and psychiatric support, to ensure that students have easy access to professional help. Additionally, universities can establish support groups or peer mentoring programs specifically tailored for students with mental illness, creating a sense of community and reducing feelings of isolation. Furthermore, faculty members and staff should receive training on mental health awareness to foster a supportive and inclusive educational environment. Lastly, implementing flexible academic policies, such as accommodation for missed deadlines or adjusted course loads, can alleviate the additional stress that students with mental illness may face. By prioritizing mental health and offering appropriate support, universities can create an inclusive space for students with mental illness to thrive academically and personally.

Answer – Part 2:
From a social psychology perspective, three concepts that can explain why some people choose to wear face coverings while others reject them during COVID-19 are:
1. Social influence: This concept highlights the impact of the social environment and the behavior of others on an individual’s choices. People who choose to wear face coverings may be influenced by societal norms, collective responsibility, or even peer pressure. On the other hand, those who reject wearing face coverings may feel influenced by a different social group that discourages or dismisses their importance.
2. Cognitive dissonance: This concept refers to the psychological discomfort experienced when an individual’s attitudes or beliefs conflict with their behavior. People who wear face coverings may do so because they have internalized the belief that it protects themselves and others from the virus, reducing the cognitive dissonance between their behaviors and health beliefs. Conversely, those who reject wearing face coverings may engage in cognitive dissonance reduction by minimizing the perceived risk or emphasizing other preventive measures.
3. Ingroup/outgroup dynamics: This concept explains how individuals tend to favor their own group and exhibit biases towards outgroups. People who wear face coverings may identify themselves as part of a group that values health, safety, and compliance with guidelines, perceiving those who reject face coverings as outgroup members who are potentially endangering others. Conversely, those who reject wearing face coverings may identify with a different group or hold beliefs that prioritize personal freedom or challenge the effectiveness of face coverings, viewing those who wear them as part of an outgroup.

By considering these social psychology concepts, we can better understand the varied perspectives and behaviors surrounding the use of face coverings during the COVID-19 pandemic.
