MHA 516 UOP Standards of Culturally and Linguistically Appropriate Services Discussion

I’m working on a health & medical discussion question and need the explanation and answer to help me learn.

It is important to consider cultural sensitivities whenever there is an implementation of innovation of change, new policies, etc. Culture is the thoughts, communications, actions, customs, beliefs, values, and institutions of racial, ethnic, religious, or social groups. The National Standards for Culturally and Linguistically Appropriate Services in Health Care report refers to the saying of Katz: by understanding, valuing, and incorporating the cultural differences of America’s diverse population and examining one’s own health-related values and beliefs, health care organizations, practitioners, and others can support a health care system that responds appropriately to, and directly serves the unique needs of populations whose cultures may be different from the prevailing culture” (Katz, Michael, 1998). For example, at my work place we have a diverse staff and everyone that walks in whether its is patient or an employee they feel welcomed. Everyone’s values and beliefs are given equal respect. Thus, hiring a diverse staff does not guarantee that cultural sensitivities will be considered. Organizations should provide staff education and training to ensure that the standards of culturally and linguistically appropriate services (CLAS) are delivered. I believe that the language aspect should be considered because many times at my work we get patients that are unable to speak, read or write English. We do have the resources to accommodate an interpreter but my organization does not have forms in multiple languages, so some patients have difficulty in completing or signing forms that are not in their preferred language. When language barriers exist, relying on staff who are not fully bilingual or lack interpreter training frequently leads to misunderstanding, dissatisfaction.

MHA 516 UOP Standards of Culturally and Linguistically Appropriate Services Discussion

Nursing Assignment Help

Introduction:

Cultural sensitivities play a crucial role in the implementation of innovation or change within healthcare organizations. It is important to recognize and respect the cultural differences of diverse populations in order to provide appropriate and effective healthcare services. This includes understanding and incorporating cultural beliefs, values, and practices into the delivery of care. Additionally, addressing language barriers is essential to ensure effective communication and understanding between healthcare providers and patients.

Answer:

When it comes to cultural sensitivities, it is not enough for healthcare organizations to simply hire a diverse staff. While a diverse workforce is certainly beneficial, it does not automatically guarantee that cultural sensitivities will be considered. It is important for organizations to provide staff education and training to ensure that culturally and linguistically appropriate services (CLAS) are effectively delivered.

Language aspects should also be given due consideration. In many healthcare settings, patients may have difficulty understanding or communicating in English. It is crucial to have resources available, such as interpreters, to accommodate patients who do not speak, read, or write English fluently. Adapting forms and documents to multiple languages can also help patients in completing necessary paperwork without confusion or difficulty.

Relying on staff members who are not fully bilingual or lacking interpreter training often leads to misunderstandings and dissatisfaction among patients. In order to overcome language barriers and provide high-quality care, healthcare organizations should invest in interpreter services and training for staff members who interact directly with patients.

By respecting and incorporating cultural differences and addressing language barriers, healthcare organizations can establish a healthcare system that responds appropriately to the unique needs of diverse populations. This inclusive approach ensures that patients from different cultural backgrounds receive the care they deserve and feel welcomed and valued within the healthcare setting.
